Colombia uses a new technology for the delimitation of wetlands and moorlands in watersheds

The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM), participates in a training workshop on RADAR technology, as well as the Alexander von Humboldt Institute (IAVH,) for the delimitation of wetlands and moorlands in Colombian watersheds.

A special staff team from the National Environmental System (SINA), is being trained to use this technology, which allows the generation of products “Flood pulses and frequencies of floods nationwide at a scale of 1:100,000”, used for time series between 2008 and 2011.

The company SARVISION, is responsible for guiding these tranings in order to develop in the participants skills for the appropriation and use of this technology within the processes of researching, tracking and monitoring of strategic ecosystems in Colombia, a process that ensures the transfer of knowledge in the field of remote sensing.

The workshop, led by the Dutch professors Dirk Hoekman and Martin Vissers, will take place over several days, during which proposals are expected to arise for the implementation of this technology into the institutions involved, as well as contributions that result in a greater understanding of the country’s ecosystems and, consequently, in improving decision making for environmental management.
