City rickshaw project uses GIS, bags national award

PUNE: The Regional Transport office (RTA) Pune has recently bagged the award of excellence for its efforts on implementing the scientific management of auto rickshaws’ project in city. The project is under implementation for the first time in the country. “Under the scheme, autorickshaws would be tracked by GPS and GIS systems. The passengers would get the service at door step by making a call or SMS to the control room. The system would also avoid the chances of over-charging,” said an official from the regional transport authority.

Having focus on both welfare of rickshaw drivers and providing prompt services to the customers, the project has been launched in the city last month. Till now, more than 2,000 drivers have registered themselves under the project. With more than 55,000 autorickshaws in Pune, the RTA is expecting an increase in registration in the near future.

The project is being financed through advertisements on autos and funding from the central government and being implemented by the Union government’s Urban Mass Transport Company in association with the RTA Pune.
