China: Operational tests of the three navigation satellites launched by China this year have revealed that the new spacecrafts are sending twice as many signals as their predecessors. The 18th, 19th and 20th satellites for the Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) were launched between July and September earlier this year. The China Academy of Space Technology says that the new units not only weigh less than half earlier generations, their output is matching the best around the world. China’s complete constellation of 35 satellites is planned to achieve global coverage by 2020.
