Chile: The Chilean authorities will invest USD 18 million to install throughout a network of 65 seismic stations. “There are 65 broadband seismic stations very modern measuring ground vibrations and seismometers that indicate the speed of ground motion,” said Sergio Barrientos, a seismologist at the University of Chile.
Further, the expert added, “Each of these stations is also an acceleration measuring instrument and an instrument of global positioning system or GPS. Each station will be connected to a satellite dish to send the data directly via satellite to our centre in Santiago.”
“Additionally, we have considered the installation of 75 global positioning stations in other areas, mainly along the coast and well over 200 accelerometers (instruments to capture the strong movement) throughout the entire country,” he outlined.
