Chesapeake Bay watershed data online

US: Penn State researchers in the US have launched a website chesapeakeview.psu.edu. The website provides information from government, academia, nonprofits and other institutions regarding the bay’s 64,000-square-mile watershed, which runs from New York to Hampton Roads.

Data comes from federal sources, such as NASA and the US Geological Survey, and smaller, local groups, including the Choptank River Heritage Center in Maryland.

According to Daily Press report, expansion of satellites, wireless communication and data processing has led to advances in remote sensing, which allows researchers to track changes to the watershed as they occur. The website, which is part of a nationwide effort by the group AmericaView, is funded in part by the Geological Survey and other federal sources.
