Canadian ice service renews ice monitoring contract with MDA

MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. announced the Canadian Ice Service (CIS) has exercised an option with the company’s RADARSAT International subsidiary to extend the provision of RADARSAT-1 images for ice monitoring and mapping of Canadian waters. The one-year extension is worth over $1 million (CDN). The Canadian Ice Service receives RADARSAT-1 images from MDA. It then creates detailed ice charts and electronically sends them to marine vessel operators, including icebreakers and the Coast Guard. This program allows us to receive data within 2 hours of acquisition by the satellite. RADARSAT-1 provides the CIS with the ice information within the critical window of opportunity where that information is still relevant to the vessel navigator.
The CIS has been using RADARSAT-1 data since 1996.
