Brazilian state to use GPS devices to monitor crops

Parana: The Technical Secretariat of Agriculture and Supply of the state of Parana will provide farmers with GPS devices which will transmit data to satellites for more precise determination of areas of crop estimates. “These devices will assist us in the development and implementation of new system of crop forecasting for agricultural monitoring using integrated technologies of remote sensing geographic information,” said Norberto Ortigara, the Secretary of the state. The new agricultural monitoring system, will serve as an important tool for the analysis of precipitation maps and forecasting grain production in Paraná.

“Our primary mission is to monitor the situation of agriculture in Paraná, identify problems and propose solutions. It constantly provides information about the performance and behavior of agriculture in Paraná, helping and formulating agricultural policies, “said Francisco Carlos Simioni, director of Department of Rural Economy (DERAL).
