BMW’s EnLighten App tracks traffic lights

Germany: The German carmaker BMW is rolling out a new feature called EnLighten App, which would tell drivers in exactly how many seconds the light they are approaching will change. The app is powered by a cloud-based system called Connected Signals. EnLighten works by connecting online with participating cities' traffic light control systems. This lets it know the cycles on which the different traffic lights operate. Using the phone's GPS, it then determines what light the driver is approaching, plus it checks the system to see how recently that light has changed to green, amber or red. In addition, the app uses data from the car, such as its location and speed. Currently, the app only supports 3 cities in the US — Portland and Eugene in Oregon and Salt Lake City in Utah.
