Belarus can make better remote sensing satellites

Belarus: Belarus is capable of creating a satellite for the remote sensing of the earth with the maximum resolution of 0.5 meters. The information was released by Sergei Chizhik, Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

The first Belarusian satellite for the remote sensing of the earth was successfully put into its orbit in summer 2012 and boasts the top resolution of 2.1 meters. The resolution is sufficient for performing various tasks relating to the sensing of the planet’s surface, detecting fires, and so on. However, in the future Belarus may need a satellite with a higher resolution.

Now scientists are busy preparing to create the next satellite for the remote sensing of the Earth. The final decision to launch the project has not been made and is likely to be made in 2014. Since the operating life of the first satellite is five years, Belarus will need a new one somewhere around 2017.

Sergei Chizhik said that with the first satellite in orbit Belarus is a space power. Belarusian industrial enterprises get orders for the development and production of equipment used for space apparatus. The volume of contract money that has been received has already exceeded the cost of the Belarusian satellite by dozens of times, admitted the official.
