Bangladesh to introduce digital maps in census

Dhaka, Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s Planning Minister AK Khandker has said that digital maps for each and every moujas (an administrative unit) and areas have been prepared for the first time through aerial photography to bring accuracy in the upcoming Population and Housing Census-2011 to be held next month.

While addressing the Dhaka Divisional Workshop on census organised by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, Khandker said, “Every enumerator and supervisor will be briefed about their respective areas through using these maps.” The Planning Minister said that all the necessary preparations have been taken this time to successfully hold the census overcoming the shortcomings of the previous censuses. He added that there is no alternative of correct statistics for formulating fair and right planning.

The next Population and Housing Census will be held in March 15-19 this year with the focus on accuracy to enumerate the household, families and population across the country. This will be the 5th census in the country after the last census was held in 2001.
