Sweden: The automotive safety systems firm Autoliv has agreed to acquire some of Sweden-based firm Fotonic i Norden AB’s LiDAR and Time of Flight tech assets, according to recent reports. Fotonic i Norden, for those unfamiliar with the name, is a firm that designs, further develops, and then manufactures LiDAR and Time of Flight camera systems.

The new acquisition agreement relates to the transfer of various intellectual property rights, development + prototyping assets, and development resources, now/previously belonging to Fotonic i Norden AB. Notably, this includes the transfer of around 35 engineering experts/employees in the fields of LiDAR and Time of Flight cameras.

The President of Autoliv Electronics, Johan Löfvenholm, commented on the news: “LiDAR and Time of Flight cameras are important sensors to make autonomous driving a reality. We are very pleased that this strong and knowledgeable team is joining our company, thereby further improving Autoliv’s already strong competence and expertise in LiDAR and vision algorithms.”

Green Car Congress provides more: “The announcement complements the collaboration with Velodyne. The transaction is expected to close before year-end 2017, and is subject to customary closing conditions. The acquired assets and resources will become part of the Autoliv Electronics segment.”

While this news may not sound too important at first, it’s worth noting that with how new the LiDAR sector is, it’s not clear yet who will emerge as the major players. Autoliv’s purchase of Fotonic i Norden assets could prove to be more notable than it may at first seem.
