The two companies will be using IoT for city services such as elevators, escalators and moving walkway equipment.

The companies believe that the partnership will result in better digital tools and will give more control to Otis customers, which are using the elevators to transport over two billion people per day.

Otis clients worldwide will use AT&T's IoT portfolio in gathering data, performing Big Data analysis through the cloud and using this information to improve the performance of manufacturing and building systems, as well as aerospace.

AT&T also announced a new partnership on Monday with global solutions integrator and data management company Globecomm to launch a service which will bring satellite connectivity to cellular networks.

The service is focused on IoT products and will allow them to operate on cellular networks when a signal is available, and then automatically switch to satellite services if there is no connection.

Mike Troiano, vice president, AT&T IoT Solutions commented, "We're offering a one-stop shop for IoT connectivity. Our customers now have a flexible, reliable and highly secure service to monitor their assets nearly anywhere. They don't have to choose one connectivity solution over the other — they can have the full package."

Research firm Gartner predicts that 6.4 billion IoT devices will be in use by the end of this year, a 30 percent rise from estimated usage data in 2015.
