Panama: The regional office for Latin America and the Caribbean of the UN Environment Program (UNEP) presented Atlas of an environment in transformation, a regional map on the environment of Latin America. It highlights climate changes in the region in recent years.
Silvia Giada, UNEP representative, said, “The document reflects changes in the region, deforestation, ecosystem degradation and growth of the population. This map also showed the melting of glaciers in some regions of Latin America caused by global warming, which was illustrated through satellite images.”
The map details 65 specific cases, showing changes in agricultural areas as well as ecological decline in some of the coastal areas. It also has photos to reflect the transformation of water systems.
Given this worldwide challenge, the UNEP recommends governments implement sustainable development programmes based on the changing environment.
