KeySpan New England, a branch of the largest distributor of natural gas in the Northeast, successfully migrated from a homegrown ArcInfo 7 environment to ArcFM and ArcGIS in March 2004.
KeySpan distributes natural gas to 2.5 million customers in New York City, Long Island and the New England region and operates more than 21,000 miles of gas mains in its service territory.
Migrating to the latest ArcFM platform has increased KeySpan NE’s system performance and provides a more productive environment for maintaining and analyzing the company’s gas distribution network. The new ArcSDE Geodatabase model allows the utility to store all its GIS related data in one central RDBMS instead of a combination of Coverage/Info files and Oracle tables. Customized functionality in KeySpan NE’s old legacy system has now been replaced with core tools in the new product, and future enhancements will be able to leverage on an existing framework, thereby cutting overall implementation costs.
The project took eight months to complete and the office is currently in production with more than 30 editors and 60 viewers. The migration also gave non-traditional users access to the GIS. The Marketing group at KeySpan can now perform spatial analysis for their business needs without having to make a special request to the GIS group.
