France, October 17, 2014: Airbus Defense and Space on October 16 signed a $1.7 billion contract to build six polar-orbiting meteorological satellites for European governments. MetOp-SG is a cooperative undertaking between ESA and Eumetsat, the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellite.
Airbus Defence and Space France will be the prime contractors for the A satellites and Airbus Defence and Space Germany for the B series. It is envisaged that the first A satellite will be launched in 2021, followed by the first B satellite in 2022.
Airbus will also design and build the ICI (Ice Cloud Imager) instruments to be launched on-board the future MetOp-SG (Second Generation) series satellites. The contract is estimated to be worth around €90 million.
