Short-course on Mapping: Beyond Essentials, 2nd – 3rd March 2013
March 2, 2013 @ 12:00 am - March 3, 2013 @ 12:00 am UTC+0
Gubbi Labs is a private research collective with strong foundations in research and underpinnings of a social enterprise. The Labs works on a host of domains ranging from sustainable ecosystems to livable settlements. The Labs is powered by a collective with interdisciplinary expertise and focus on research, development and consultancy. Gubbi Labs also offers specialized training from time-to-time based on specific user requirements. In pursuance with this, Gubbi Labs is offering short-courses.
“Mapping: Beyond Essentials” is an intense 2-day course for researchers and professionals interested to harness the potentials of geospatial methods in their respective domains. This course, Beyond Essentials, will address two key components: geospatial analysis and geo-visualisation. The course will engage participants to perform spatial analysis through hands-on exposure and practical case studies using free-and-open-source mapping applications. Indicative case studies are:
- Site suitability analysis for siting of residential / commercial / industrial projects.
- Species distribution modeling (to forecast potential distribution of species in question).
At the end of the program, participants will be able to appreciate the methods, gaining insights to apply appropriate techniques in their respective domains and eventually be able to perform spatial analysis for their own needs.
Tools/Technologies exposed: QGIS, DIVA-GIS, openModeller, TileMill and Mapbox
Faculty: The course will be taught by Dr. H. S. Sudhira and Dr. K. V. Gururaja.
Eligibility / Pre-requisites:
This program is open to participants from any domain and not limited to engineering, sciences, ecology and social sciences. However, exposure to geospatial datasets, formats and tools or experience working with any GIS software and handling spatial data is a must.
Participation is limited to 20 applicants. Participants are highly encouraged that they bring their own laptop.
