UNWGIC – The stage is set for making geospatial more useful for common good

Geospatial has undoubtedly become the ‘way of life’ today. Businesses are largely utilizing the intelligence of location to give decision making a boost. The acceptance is growing, painting a positive picture for the industry. However, let’s pause for a moment and ponder over a few lurking doubts, “Is the industry doing enough?” “Is the geospatial community learning from each other?” “Do we all understand the true worth of geospatial and taking concrete steps to make it work for the welfare of the community?”

We definitely need to do more.

UN-GGIM has been playing a pivotal role in making geospatial a true enabler since long. Realizing the gap that exists between the thoughts and actions, and to make the world more aware what all can be achieved through geospatial, it has been incessantly organizing workshops and sessions around the world, and United Nations World Geospatial Information Congress (UNWGIC) is another such intriguing attempt.

The inaugural UNWGIC is an excellent step by UN-GGIM to provide a convening, participatory and inclusive environment to enhance communication, understanding, knowledge and application of geospatial information management. China’s contribution to the global geospatial industry is growing by leaps and bounds and this makes it the right choice for an event of this scale. The collaboration of Ministry of Natural Resources, China and The Government of Zhejiang Province, China adds thrust to the initiative.

The theme of the Congress, ‘The Geospatial way for a better world’, focuses on strengthening national geospatial information management and systems, and national implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

What is the need for building a geospatial data ecosystem for SDGs?

What all is there to unravel

The overall event is expected to be a week long, and will include exhibitions, global and regional meetings, workshops and learning events, side events and meetings, including the 7th Plenary Meeting of the Regional Committee of United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management for Asia and the Pacific (UN-GGIM-AP), as well as the annual UN-GGIM Expanded Bureau meeting.

The two major highlights of the Congress are the Plenary Sessions and the Geospatial Technology and Application Exhibition.

The Plenary Sessions will engage the audience through:

  • Ministerial Dialogue: Towards a more sustainable world for all
  • Plenary 1: Sharing the digital economy
  • Plenary 2: Attaining sustainable development
  • Plenary 3: Building smart societies
  • Plenary 4: Growing international cooperation

The Geospatial Technology and Application Exhibition

As an important part of the UNWGIC, the Geospatial Technology and Application Exhibition will be organized from 19-23 November 2018 at the Deqing International Exhibition Center. It will showcase the state-of-the-art technologies, products and application solutions from the world-leading companies, academic and research institutions, as well as other related organizations from across the globe.

The products showcased at the Exhibition will revolve around four major themes: 1) Intelligent Equipment, 2) Smart Applications, 3) Location-Based Services, and 4) Future Life.

The Exhibition will be a prime opportunity for professionals and businesses to network and build relations for long-term associations.

UNWGIC is keen to have on board a rich amalgamation of enterprises, research institutions, and other organizations from China and abroad. The Exhibition will be a unique opportunity for the exhibitors to present to the world a wonderful chapter of geospatial technology and information development and promote its extensive applications.

Interested organizations need to complete and submit the Exhibition Application Form, available for download on the UNWGIC website, to the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the UNWGIC by email at [email protected]. The LOC for the UNWGIC will review all the applications and inform if the organization is accepted as an exhibitor by 31 October 2018.
