With the length of 3368 km, the coastal line in Guangdong province has 1/5 of all and is the longest one in China. Because of its abundant resources, the Guangdong coastal areas have being played an enormous and important role in the progress of modern society and economy of Guangdong province even China. However, the inappropriate pattern of economic development and increasingly explosive growing rate of population have put immense stress on the resources and environment of the coastal zone in Guangdong province. How to take effective measurements and adopt integrated management to ensure sustainable development in the coastal areas of Guangdong is ever becoming a focus that attracts close attentions to the governmental and academic sectors recently. It is important to resolve the problem to establish an advanced decision support system for the coastal zone sustainable development to help scientific decision-making and carry out integrated coastal zone management. The paper mainly introduces the framework of Guangdong Coastal Zone Sustainable Development Decision Support System (GCZSDDSS), including the requirements, general objectives, functional structure, data models and key technologies etc., after expounding the basic concept of Guangdong Coastal Zone Sustainable Development Decision Support System (GCZSDDSS). Furthermore, the paper emphasizes the crucial role of GIS and RS in the setting-up of GCZSDDSS and discusses the methods of the GCZSDDSS in forms of the complexity of features of coastal zone enormous spatial data, which aims at offering an entire solution for realization of the GCZSDDSS ultimately.
