Leica Geosystems Geospatial Imaging announces the opening of Leica Geosystems Geospatial Imaging India Private Limited, with its headquarters in Gurgaon (New Delhi), India.

The following is an exclusive interview conducted by GIS Development with Mr. Kaushik Chakraborty, Vice President India, Middle East, and Africa, Leica Geosystems Geospatial Imaging:

Q. Leica has been doing business in India for long through it’s distributors/partners, what difference will it make with the parent company’s presence to its users in India?
By opening Leica Geosystems Geospatial Imaging India Private Limited, we have not only increased our product offering (Leica Geosystems full portfolio of products from authoring to managing, connecting and delivering geospatial information), but also brought Leica Geosystems’ professional services, application development and real time technical support in country. While distributors specialize in a broad array of solutions, our staff are Leica Geosystems experts, focused entirely on the full range of our product portfolio. Furthermore, our staff in India will also leverage this expertise to develop customized solutions catering to the unique Indian market.

Q. What makes you feel this region has unique needs in terms of “Geospatial Solution”? Are you referring to the process or the solution?
Today India is amongst the fastest growing regions in the world. Because of this, India has many challenges in managing its infrastructure growth and the rate of change whilst maintaining social responsibilities. There is an increasing awareness of the use of geospatial information to drive decisions within the government; however we feel that there is much more education and awareness required at the grass roots level. More local involvement will help explain the real value of integrating geospatial and location-based information and intelligence into the nation’s existing public governance and infrastructure management applications. Because of this, Leica Geosystems seeks to increase its local participation, recognizing that India’s requirements are unique when compared to those in North America, Europe and Australia.

Q. What specific strategy does LGGI India bring to cater to this market? Do you forsee expanding the offering of LGGI in India?
Yes, Leica Geosystems India has extensive plans to continue to grow as an entity, offering Leica Geosystems full portfolio, and adding to this as new technologies are introduced. Leica Geosystems India will be the only company in India to sell and support Leica Geosystems’ product portfolio in its entirety, which includes not only ERDAS IMAGINE, Leica Photogrammetry Suite and Leica Virtual Explorer, but also the technologies and products recently acquired from Acquis, ER Mapper and IONIC and those combining technologies implementing Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) to manage, connect and serve geospatial information and intelligence.

Q. Do you foresee that LGGI India may look at establishing its R&D set up in India in addition to sale of its software?
Yes, Leica Geosystems India is in the process of setting up a software engineering group to develop core technologies for global consumption, as well as to build customized geospatial solutions in their India offices to meet the needs of the rapidly expanding market in India.
