Road accidents are one of the major problems being faced by modern societies. The deaths of persons and serious economic loss caused by road accident demand a continuous attention in accordance with the spectacular growth in road transportation. One of the major concerns in Transportation system is the study of accident patterns because of large volume of data associated with it. Even the data bases mostly in the form of linear record file system, nicely helpful in placing the analyzed information only in tabular forms, missing the spatial distribution of accidents, which is the key element in analyzing accident patterns. The potential of GIS has its capability in modeling such a phenomena with ease and flexibility.

In this project, an effort has been made to identify the accident prone zones in Madurai city using GIS. The accident data for the years 2004- 2005 for Madurai city has been taken to locate the accident prone zones. The accident particulars like date, location, type of vehicle involved, persons injured or death are included in the GIS database. The “Density” function in Spatial analyst extension of ArcGIS was applied to identify the accident prone areas during the years 2004 – 2005. Both Simple & Kernel density were applied in identifying accident patterns. The road geometry was then measured in the field in the accident prone locations to find out the cause of the accident. The analyzed information would be useful in adopting improvement measures to reduce accident in future.
