Please tell us something about the Dubai Police General Department of Operations? What are the challenges and hurdles in your domain?
As with any other Police department, Dubai Police along with other supporting departments has various responsibilities where we are in charge of the entire command and control room of the Dubai Emirate, 999 emergency calls, dispatch and monitoring of patrol cars, ambulance services, search and rescue services, air wing division of the police, transportation and communication. Maintaining these operations of the Dubai Police department come across various unique challenges and hurdles. In past few years Dubai has witnessed rapid growth and vast expansion of the city as well as the increase in population. Dubai dwells with almost 180 nationalities with different languages, background, and culture. Maintaining the smooth traffic with ever growing traffic jams within city is one of the biggest challenge. Knowing the above facts Dubai as city has high expectations of services which has been quite challenging for Dubai Police in maintaining the law and order of the city.
In the present world state-of-the-art technologies are being utilized to support police security operations. What is the role of geospatial data and technology in your various activities?
With the new geospatial state-of-the-art technologies has been quite helpful and fruitful in many operations of the Dubai Police Departments such as Traffic Department, Central Investigation Department and General Department of Operations. Dubai Police were among the very first to utilize the Automatic Vehicle Locator (A.V.L) to locate and track the movement of the police patrol vehicles using Loran C signals in Gulf (in the mid-eighties even before many European and American countries used the same) and now, we are the first to use satellite and GPS for Automatic Vehicle Locator(A.V.L) With help of the geospatial technology being implemented in the system it is also being utilized for locating 999 callers and we have also been using it for planning the movement of traffic during major exhibitions and conferences held in the City.
How much is the use of global positioning technologies in Dubai Police General Department of Operations currently?
Global Positioning technologies in Dubai Police Department started way back in 1987 with use of Loran C signals to provide radio navigation service for Automatic Vehicle Locator (AVL) and now we are the first to use GPS along with satellite data for AVL system since 1993. Now all the Dubai Police Patrol cars and Ambulance Cars have built in GPS systems for locating the vehicles at the time of need which is big advantage for us. We also have mobile receiving systems, where the public/privately owned cars having their own navigational system can seek assistance at the time of emergency and as per their location the necessary help is deployed to them immediately.
