Abstract
One of the natural hazard is drought, which causes by shortage of raining and humidity deficit. When a drought occurs dramatic social, economic and environmental effects are inevitable. Because of the vast impact of drought, it is essential to be monitored timely and spatially. In order to evaluation and mapping of drought severity in Azarbayejan province, it used the SPI (standard precipitation index) model and GIS. The monthly precipitation data was the inputs in the model. The SPI is calculated with precipitation data and then drought condition interpreted in each place. It used GIS as a tool for mapping of the area in relation to SPI amount. At the first the DEM (Digital elevation model) is prepared for the Azarbayejan province using Arc/info software and a digitizer. The regression equation calculated between elevation and SPI value for the area and the geographical distribution map of SPI was prepared. Finally with classification of this map base on the SPI value the drought condition map of area obtained. It used different methods to interpolate drought data for spatial analysis using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). It concluded that Kriging method is suitable for this analysis. This method was used for zoning drought over Azarbayejan province and produced zoning map of drought severity for different time scales.
