Over the past few years, the use of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology for mapping has proliferated in different areas. The ability of LiDAR systems to capture highly accurate spot heights very quickly is the principal reason behind LiDAR’s success. The greater density, accuracy and digital nature of the data collected allows for better analysis and much more precise solutions. For utilities applications, for example, only LiDAR technology is able to capture the real-time catenaries of transmission lines, allowing for the analysis and re-rating of those lines. For new route alignment studies, only LiDAR is able to precisely map a wide corridor area in a very short time allowing for rapid investigation of multiple alignments for cost effectiveness, earthworks minimization and other issues. These and other applications in the Utilities Industries will be discussed.
