Analysis of traffic flow in Varanasi city by using GIS

Abstract:
The total traffic composition of this heritage city is somewhat different from other contemporary cities of the country. The traffic composition is overwhelmingly marked by presence of large number of light category vehicles who do not occupy much space on the road. Geographical Information System (GIS) was used in identification of the locations which are the most critical sites from the point of view of traffic congestion and highly used by tourists and visitors. Here GIS was used as a tool for the identification of congested sections. To study the nature of traffic flow in those sections, traffic flow data was collected for peak, off-peak and mixed flow. Then to understand the nature of the traffic flow, a combined speed – flow model was developed for peak, off-peak and mixed flow. The model was tested for verification on another data collected on any other day using parametric Chi Square test, which predicts the nature of traffic flow.
