A personal profile and an exclusive interview of Dr Suvit Vibulsresth, Director, Geo-informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), Thailand

Let peace and harmony prevail in this world, that is what Dr Suvit Vibulsresth felt. A person uncomfortable with many odd things in this world such as poverty and inequality, but still does not believe in hate because of his deep roots in Buddhism. No wonder, at the age of 14 he wanted to become the Secretary General of the United Nations as he thought that it was the institution instrumental in bringing peace to this world. But to become UN Secretary General, some one suggested that he needed to become the Foreign Affair Minister of Thailand. Upon hearing this, he changed his mind and became an engineer instead.

After completing his basic education, Dr Suvit went to Osaka University, Japan for his B. Eng (Telecommunication). For Masters degree he went to McGill University, Canada and also studied Remote Sensing at Purdue University, USA. He did his PhD under the guidance of Prof Shunji Murai at the University of Tokyo, Japan.

He started his career as an engineer in The Post and Telegraph Department and thereafter worked as a scientist at Applied Scientific Research Corporation of Thailand. He had a long career of around 25 years in National Research Council where he served the organisation in various capacities. He had been the Secretary General of the National Research Council. He worked as Deputy Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment from November 1997 to January 2001. Since January 2001, he is working as Director, Geo-informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

Dr Suvit Vibulsresth has been honoured by several Royal Thai Government Orders and Decorations such as Knight Grand Cordon (Special Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand and Knight Grand Cross (First Class) of the Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant. Higher education never tempted him to become an academician because he believed in making ideas to take the shape of realities. He is a man of straight words and firm actions. He doesn’t make any effort at hiding his views and feelings. He means business.

At leisure, he plays table tennis, goes for swimming and physical exercises. He intends to work on Buddhism, or publish his experiences on Remote Sensing.
