The two day second National GIS Conference and Exhibition organized by Malaysian Centre for Geospatial Data Infrastructure (MaCGDI) took place on 13th and 14th July at Putra World Trade Center, Kuala Lumpur. It was inaugurated by YB Dato’ S Sothinathan, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE).
Together with this 2nd NGIS, the minister also officially launched the Malaysia GeoPortal Application for public usage and 1st Edition of GIS Bulletin for Public Sector. This Conference and Exhibition that witnessed the presence of over 300 delegates and 20 booths was organized with objective of nencouraging and increasing the usage of GeoInformation Technology in government and other user departments and thus improving upon the efficiency;
- developing more pro-active action and responsibility to develop the suitable GIS system for different departments and users within the country;
- developing this event as a platform to improve the implementation of GIS in the agency;
- developing more co-operation among the user agencies and institutions within the country and keeping in mind the vision of country in Information Technology sector; and
- increasing the usage of MaCGDI’s geospatial portal among the users and target group and establish MaCGDI as the dissemination centre of Geo-Spatial Information technology.
The conference comprised of two technical sessions, namely Malaysian Geospatial Data Information Infrastructure (MyGDI) and Geospatial Information Usage in Public Agencies.
First session had presentations made on MyGDI Development, Product and Services, presented by Tuan Haji Mohsin bin Haji Ahmad, Director of MaCGDI, Capacity Building for Geospatial Data Infrastructure presented by YBhg Dato’ Sr Dr. Abdul Kadir bin Taib, from Department of Survey and Mapping (JUPEM) and Policy with Data Standard by Sr Dr. Zainal Bin A. Majeed, Principal Assistant Director, MaCGDI respectively.
Second session pertaining to Geospatial Information usage in public agencies had presentations from multiple user departments as Department of Town Planning (Encik Mohd Ali Bin Abu Bakar), Seberang Perai Municipal Council (Tuan Haji Ahmad Fuad Bin Haji Hashim), Department of Forestry Peninsular Malaysia (Dr. Alias Bin Mohd Sood), Department of Irrigation and Drainage (Tuan Haji Zainal Akamar Harun) and Transport Management Centre (Dr. Khoiri Mohd Dimyati).
The session continued the second day also. Geoff Zeiss, Director of Technology Autodesk made his presentation on implementing Open Source Solution in Geospatial Environment. The other presentations made showcased application of GIS technology to rural development (YBhg. Dato’ Yaacob Bin Nordin) and Emergency Response and crime combating (Supt. Dr. Chai Khin Chung, Royal Malaysian Police). Puan Doria Tai Yun Tyng of Sabah’s Land and Survey Department talked on Sabah SDI product showcase and Tuan Haji Hamdan Bin Haji Mohd Kassim of Negeri Sembilan’s Town and Planning Department expressed his views on Direction and Challenges for GIS 9 – the planning support system of the State of Negeri Sembilan.
A workshop on how to improve the implementation of MyGDI was conducted at the end of the conference. The session was chaired by Tuan Haji Hashim Bin Hamzah, Principal Assistant Director, MaCGDI. “The post event analysis showed that this 2nd NGIS had seen an increase of participants about 2/3 compared to the previous 1st NGIS.
